Why Patients Choose Us

Dr. Schultz has trained under some of the top ophthalmologists and medical optometrists in the eye care field today. He completed a rigorous accredited residency program emphasizing specialty ocular disease care and surgical management of eye diseases at Omni Eye Services in New Jersey and New York City. Through this program, Dr. Schultz worked with thousands of patients with complex diseases. He gained exposure to all eye surgical specialties including cataract and refractive surgery, corneal transplant surgery, endothelial transplantations, oculo-plastic surgeries, glaucoma laser treatments, minimally invasive glaucoma (MIGS) surgeries and more invasive surgeries such as trabeculectomy and tube shunt procedures. The program also afforded Dr. Schultz advanced training and expertise in retinal disease diagnosis and treatment, angiography and retinal surgery. Furthermore Dr. Schultz had the advantage of training with a neuro-ophthalmologist in the diagnosis and management of neuro-ophthalmic disease states and worked together in practice with Dr. Barry Schanzer, MD for seven years.

After completion of his residency training, Dr. Schultz was hired by the center as a full-time consultant and referral specialist. Very few residency programs offer the exposure to the breath of disease states that doctor Schultz has been trained to treat. Only about 15% of optometrists complete residency training and far less complete ocular disease and surgical training as extensive as that of Dr. Schultz’s training. Dr. Schultz’s practice was specialized in diseases of the eye and surgical management for 20 years before he opened the Eye Center of Virginia in Williamsburg.

Dr. Schultz has been a teacher of student doctors, residents, and practicing optometrists for 20 years. He was the residency director of the ocular disease and surgical program at Vision America, in Memphis Tennessee from 2000-2004. He is also a frequent lecturer on the national circuit on the topics of ocular disease management and advances in surgical care. He is a longstanding member of the American Academy of Optometry, and was a founding member of the Retina Special Interest Group and served as its chair from 2016-2019. He continues to lecture and write articles on his topics of expertise.

Our Philosophy

The Eye Center of Virginia was established with one mission in mind: to deliver the highest level of specialty eye care while spending time with each individual patient to ensure their questions are answered. We know that health care often feels rushed and patients are treated more like a number than a person. That’s why it is important to us that we take the time to ensure that our patients are comfortable with the treatment plan before moving forward.

We look forward to personally meeting and serving the families of Williamsburg and surrounding communities.
